Experimental Study of Passive Dynamic Bipedal Walking: Comparing Test Platforms
نویسنده
چکیده
In this study an experimental passive dynamic biped walker is developed. The design of the experimental passive walker incorporates an accelerometer and an encoder for the purpose of gait measurement. The aim of this study is to compare the equivalency of testing a passive dynamic biped walker on a ramp to testing on a treadmill. The measured gaits produced on a ramp and on a treadmill are used to determine the equivalency between the two test platforms. Using the data from the aforementioned accelerometer and encoder various gait parameters are determined. To quantitatively compare the gaits produced on the two test platforms, the step period, step length, and average hip velocity are determined. To qualitatively compare the two gaits produced, a phase portrait of the inner leg angle and the acceleration profile of the hip are generated. From the analysis, the difference between the two gaits produced is easily within the measurement error. Therefore, based on the small difference between the two gaits, testing on a treadmill was found to be equivalent to testing on a ramp.

The research on the principles of legged locomotion is an interdisciplinary endeavor. Such principles are coming together from research in biomechanics, neuroscience, control theory, mechanical design, and artificial intelligence. Such research can help us understand human and animal locomotion in implementing useful legged vehicles. There are three main reasons for exploring the legged locomot...

This work explores regulation of forward speed, step length, and slope walking for the passive-dynamic class of bipedal robots. Previously, an energy-shaping control for regulating forward speed has appeared in the literature; here we show that control to be a special case of a more general time-scaling control that allows for speed transitions in arbitrary time. As prior work has focused on po...

SUMMARY Achieving energy-efficient and high-speed dynamic walking has become one of the main subjects of research in the area of robotic biped locomotion, and passive dynamic walking has attracted a great deal of attention as a solution to this. It is empirically known that the convex curve of the foot, which characterizes passive–dynamic walkers, has an important effect on increasing the walki...
متن کاملFrom Passive Dynamic Walking to Passive Turning of Biped walker
Dynamically stable biped robots mimicking human locomotion have received significant attention over the last few decades. Formerly, the existence of stable periodic gaits for straight walking of passive biped walkers was well known and investigated as the notion of passive dynamic walking. This study is aimed to elaborate this notion in the case of three dimensional (3D) walking and extend it f...

A two-straight-legged walking mechanism with flat feet is designed and built to study the passive dynamic gait. It is shown that the mechanism having flat feet can exhibit passive dynamic walking as those with curved feet, but the walking efficiency is significantly lower. It is also shown that the balancing mass and its orientation are etfective for controlling side-to-side rocking and yaw, wh...
